Where living has room to breathe
💭 behind the first ever Rejuvenation Week @ DD HQ
DD HQ here. What’s your relationship with ‘doing nothing’?
If you’ve been part of our crew for a while, you know that we’re big fans of making room to be unproductive. Not only does unwinding productivity culture feel enticing especially as burnout hits an all-time high, it’s the basis of creative thinking.
Think of it this way: in order for our brain to make new connections, it needs room to breathe.
If the word ‘unproductive’ makes you cringe, it’s because we’ve been trained to optimize every ounce of our time. And, it’s not for lack of wanting to chill out more often - we homo sapiens are inherently lazy and we naturally gravitate towards celebration and rest.
Only recently did we turn ‘laziness’ into a bad word.
At DD, you know that we’re here to change that status quo on every level and help us all return back to our natural, creative state. So, starting next week we’re walking-the-walk in an even bigger way than usual: we’re taking our first ever Rejuvenation Week @ DD HQ.
That means even as a small startup, we’re making room for our entire team to ‘do nothing’. To let our brains rest. To daydream. And take a stand against burnout culture…especially as we’re building a rocketship to change the world 🛸.
Though prioritizing rest and rejuvenation isn’t new to us - we’ve intentionally structured an entire ‘rest’ week into each pathway on the DD journey - it doesn’t necessarily make it easy to put into action. At DD HQ, we’ve had to plan and even set boundaries among ourselves to make room for this time as a vital part of our culture.
But, we know that not everyone has access to taking a week to daydream - and based on scientific research, any amount of rest time has a powerful impact on our well-being. Even just five minutes of boredom between meetings can send our brain into the default mode network. Hello creative thinking!
Since you won’t see an email in your inbox from us next week, use that extra space as a reminder that resting is a radical choice.
We’re humans, not robots - remember?

An idea to noodle on 💭
Doing nothing is the other side of creative thinking
THINK ON THIS: Giving ourselves room to breathe is a radical act. With things like ‘productivity scores’ on the rise, idle time can be seen as a negative thing in our culture. But, remember: productivity and busyness are not the same thing. Ironically, the more we tap into our creative brain - the more we can get done.
…MAYBE NOT THAT: Boredom may feel uncomfortable, but it’s doing something powerful underneath the surface. Think of it like a mental and creative reset. When our brain doesn’t have enough simulation, it begins to look for new connections - i.e. creativity. Plus, of course, it’s an emotional recharge.
Ideas from the DD Crew 🛸
When we’re back from our Rejuvenation Week we’ll be sure to share how it’s impacted our team’s well-being, creative thinking + ability to show up to work towards the DD mission as our fullest selves. What would be most interesting to learn about?
+ comment here or respond to this email with what you’re up to during your unproductive time this week and we’ll share it with the DD crew for inspo 🙃
