How To Actually Think For Yourself: Developing Cognitive Sovereignty, Originality and Critical Thinking (based on science, not vibes)
Field Guide: The trend hamster wheel needs to end - for our own health, creativity...and sanity. Here's exactly how we can start.
Field Notes is my private research lab where we’re building the field of Creative Health in real time. It’s where I break down the latest scientific research on creativity and flourishing, dissect exactly how it impacts your daily life - and then, we get to shape where the field goes next, together 🧠
THE WORLD IS SO LOUD, WE CAN BARELY HEAR OUR OWN THOUGHTS 🤯
I was on a walk the other day - no headphones or agenda - and a question popped into my brain I couldn’t stop thinking about.
Why does it feel like everyone has opinions right now? Strong, immediate ones. Ones that are fully formed, shared with complete confidence, 45-seconds after something happens in the world?
And then, a quieter, softer question bubbled up underneath: What are my opinions? Do I even know what I think anymore?
I kept walking, and let the murkiness of the question exist. I didn’t Google an answer or look for an expert take. I just kept moving, wondering, asking without demanding. And slowly (slower than I’d like to admit 😅), a perspective started to take shape.
It wasn’t a hot-take I could fully articulate with a camera to my face. It was something quieter - but also, more mine.
I’ll be honest: This was rare for me. I love having an idea and immediately looking for evidence. There’s almost a manic urgency that seems to take over, as if I’ll forget exactly what I believe.
But, after analyzing dozens of research papers: The experience of having a real original idea is nothing like that. In fact, the process1 of how we come to our own original, unique perspectives is nearly opposite of the way most of us live today.
And in my view, this erosion of our creative brain is one of the most urgent Creative Health issues of our time. Because right now, we’re living through an unprecedented inflection point for human thinking - and everything, from algorithms to career success, is designed to keep us in reaction mode.
The cost is almost invisible, because on the surface, we look well-informed. But, developing the capacity to think for yourself - genuinely, originally, from the inside out - will be the defining human skill of the next century.
Not because it makes you more productive. Because it’s how we ultimately stay free…
In this Field Guide 🌾, I’m breaking down:
→ Why our brains are not built to think differently - and what that costs us
→ The four-step scientific process for developing genuinely original opinions - and how it runs almost completely backwards from what we currently do
→ What exploration actually feels like from the inside - and how to turn it on when everything around you is pulling toward “exploitation”
→ What cognitive sovereignty gives us emotionally + psychologically - and why it’s the missing dimension of Creative Health nobody is talking about
→ The practices that build our critical thinking muscle: opinion fasting, constraint thinking, perspective switching…
